Does TIP TIG Need a New Welding Procedure Qualification?

Under ASME Section IX, switching to TIP TIG means revising the WPS — not requalifying it — and a qualified manual GTAW welder is already qualified.

One of the first questions fabricators ask about TIP TIG is a procedural one: does adopting it mean requalifying every welding procedure and every welder? For code-driven shops that is a real cost concern. Under ASME Section IX, the short answer is no — you revise the WPS, but you do not requalify it. Here is exactly why.

The procedure (WPS): revise, don’t requalify

When you qualify a WPS, you are demonstrating the mechanical properties of the weld — and the weld does not care whether the filler metal was added by hand or by a machine. The properties are unaffected by how the wire is fed.

Section IX reflects this. Table QW-256 identifies QW-410.25 — the variable covering the type of welding (manual, semi-automatic, machine, automatic) — as a non-essential variable for GTAW. “Non-essential” does not mean you can ignore it: it means the variable has to be addressed in the WPS, but does not have to be qualified.

So to start using TIP TIG you revise the WPS to allow semi-automatic welding. And because semi-automatic welding uses a wire feeder, the WPS must also specify the wire size and the wire feed speed.

The welder: already qualified

A welder qualified to run manual GTAW is also qualified to run semi-automatic GTAW. Table QW-356 sets the qualification variables for GTAW welders, and its own title is “Essential Variables for Manual and Semi-automatic Gas Tungsten-Arc Welding (GTAW)” — with no variable regarding the type of welding. There is nothing to requalify.

The one caveat: training

Running TIP TIG is not the same as adding filler by hand, so this is a skill to practise, not a formality. Welders should work with the equipment until they can reliably make welds with full penetration on the root and good fusion between passes. Requalification is not required — but welding a test coupon and running a few bend tests to verify welder skill is recommended before production.

The bottom line

When you switch to TIP TIG:

  • No WPS requalification — but the WPS must be revised to allow semi-automatic welding and to specify the correct wire size and filler-metal feed speed.
  • No welder requalification — but give the welder some training with the equipment first.

That keeps the barrier to adoption low: the process change is real, but the paperwork is a WPS revision, not a fresh qualification campaign.
